Happy International Women's Day!!
So this is a late one, I've been ill all week with the flu and though I tried, I just could not write! Then today I was at the SustainableFashionDublin 's International woman's day event today were I met some seriously amazing women, there was spoken word artists, journalists, influencers and singers, all talking about how they are trying to be that little bit more sustainable.
I felt so inspired by all these women, and with it being #IWD2020 I wanted to do a bit of a serious blog this week about how fast fashion is indeed a feminist issue.
I won't name name's but all week certain brands have been trying to sell you t - shirts with catchy feminist slogans in the run up to today, these same brand's use factories that pay their workers ( 80% of whom are women) well below minimum wage, these women often have to work over time just to make ends meet. The women in these factories are seen as docile and unlikely to speak up if they feel something is wrong and if they do, they are often threatened, some even sexually harassed!
In November 2012, there was a fire in a factory in Bangladesh that caused the death of 112 factory workers, women and some children. Five months later, the Rana Plaza building (another fashion factory) collapsed, killing 1,134 workers and injuring hundreds more. The building had been evacuated the day before when cracks in the walls became noticeable, but deadlines had to be met and management told the workers to go back in. So instead of buying a cute #feminist tee think about the poor women who are being paid penny's and wearing nappies just so they don't have to take a toilet break and get more work done. Why not fashion your own with an old t - shirt and some paint or embroider a little catchy slogan of your own if you can!
Again, apologies for the lateness of this blog, I hope you had a kick ass International women's day, I know I did! I'm writing this with a heart full of happiness, belly full of treats and lovely pints and I hope I read this in the morning without too much regret and still have a potential career in writing!
Ha!
Yours Sustainably,
