Lets talk about vintage...

More and more people are wearing vintage clothes and I love it! Be it for some chic festival fashion or cute everyday outfits.

So what makes a piece of clothing vintage?

Vintage is commonly used to describe an old style of clothes, anything 20 years or older is considered vintage. That's right, the 90's right up to the year 2000 is now considered vintage. So 90's kids, we're not old... we're vintage!

I have been second hand shopping since I was a child with my mam, nanny and aunt, but my vintage journey started about a year ago. The first piece I ever bought was an Adidas shell jacket from Finders Keepers in Bray. Now, I have a massive vintage collection from tie dye tees, jeans, dresses and coats.

A lot of people think of vintage clothes as old and frumpy, but that is far from true! I have come across some absolutely stunning vintage pieces. Vintage clothes can be super chic and they're built to last, when cared for properly they can last decades! Years ago, when the zipper broke on your jeans or there was a hole in your favorite blouse, you fixed it. I love when I find a piece that has clearly been altered in someway. But today, we live in a throw away culture, this means when something is broken or we don't wear it anymore we simply throw it out instead of mending it or up cycling it into a fresher piece.

If you are new to the vintage scene or want to add some vintage to your wardrobe, I suggest starting with a good pair of jeans, vintage jeans are to die for! Like all vintage items, finding the perfect pair of jeans can take time. The right pair of jeans should hug you in all the right places, but feel comfortable and not restrict your movement. While on the subject of denim, a vintage denim jacket is a must in your vintage wardrobe, they are timeless and so effortlessly chic.

A good flannel shirt, a cute vintage dress and a cosy crew neck jumper are also vintage wardrobe staples.

It's important to try the clothes on, remember vintage sizing is a lot different than sizing today. A vintage piece could be marked large but could fit someone who is a size 8 perfectly. You know the way people applaud Marilyn Monroe for being for being a sex symbol and having tummy rolls. In the 50's, Marilyn Monroe's dress size was a size 16 but in today's sizing she would a 10 / 12.

Crazy right?

Marilyn Monroe was a size 16 in the 50's but today would be a size 12.

Vintage shops are popping up all over now, physically and on the internet. A lot of vintage stores will also have an online shop which is handy especially during our current pandemic situation, Other vintage sellers have taken to selling through their social media platforms. I know I keep harping on about it but Depop is great for vintage finds too, I've bought a few vintage items from Depop including a gorgeous dusty pink faux fur coat from the 1970s.

entire outfit is vintage.

So whether you are a vintage noob or a seasoned veteran, one thing is for sure... Vintage will never go out of fashion.

Yours sustainably,
