White girl (zero) wasted!

Hello there!

This week's blog is all about zero waste. I was at a Lush Cosmetic's zero waste work shop on Monday and felt inspired to write about how little changes can have a big impact!

At the Lush event, I was shocked when we were told the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into the ocean every minute! By 2030 that is likely to rise to two trucks per minute and by 2050 it's estimated that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

Plastic in our oceans is causing so much damage to our marine life. I know you've all seen the video a while back of the poor sea turtle with a straw stuck in his nostril, that was a horrific watch and people pledged to get rid of plastic straws, which is great, but plastic straws are only a very small part of the problem! Thankfully, there are so many ways to reduce our plastic consumption now.

So now I'm going to highlight some ways you can go zero waste!

Reusing glass jars.

Glass jars can be re-purposed into almost anything! I use them to store over night oats for a quick breakfast snack that you can have at home or on the go!

Another use for reusing glass jars is storing your homemade sauces or jams which are actually super easy to make too. So instead of buying tomato sauce every week why not learn how to make your own and store it in your empty old glass jars?

Why not use them as decoration, turn them into cute candle holders, plant pots or a treat jar for your furry friend?

Keep cups and reusable bottles

Keep cups are great, I personally take mine everywhere with me! I have my keep cup for my oat milk mochas (notions) and my Chilly's bottle of water in my bag at all times and actually feel a bit guilty if I ever do forget them lol. Another reason everyone should own a keep cup of some discription, aside from helping the planet is, a lot of coffee shops now give you a discount on your coffee if you bring your own cup. It doesn't have to be a fancy/expensive one, your favorite mug from home or the office will do! So get a reusable cup, save some money, and the planet while sipping on your daily dose of go faster juice.

Skin and Hair care

So I was at a Lush cosmetics zero waste work shop on Monday, where we were talked through Lush's naked range. The naked range is essentially skin and hair care products that have no packaging whatsoever. They have shampoo and conditioner bars for your hair, I got one and it's so good and smells A - MAZING but everything in Lush does, doesn't it?

There's also a solid skin care product like cleansers, toners and moisturisers. Lush also have their charity pots initiative. When you buy one of these pots the money goes to a charity so you are already doing some good. If you collect five of these pots you can bring them back to your local Lush store ( clean them out first) they will send them to their GreenHub to be recycled and you'll receive a free face mask! So you're doing double good!

And Finally,

Make up wipes

Wet wipes are so bad for our environment, they end up in our oceans and blocking sewerage systems. So the easiest zero waste alternative to these is the simple face cloth, that and your naked cleanser and moisturiser will have your skin make up free and glowing in no time!

There's also reusable make up pads you can buy online on sites like Reuzi. The lovely girls Taz and Ger from Sustainable Fashion Dublin (if you're not already following them you should) have a easy to follow tutorial on how to make your own reusable make up pads on their Instagram highlights.

So that's all my zero waste tips for this week, if you have any other ideas or would like me to do another zero waste blog HMU on Instagram!

Yours sustainably,
